NICK MATTHEW

Born and raised in Sheffield, Nick enjoyed a promising career as a junior and first came to prominence in 1998 when he was part of the England team to win the World Junior Team title.  The following year he enhanced his already growing reputation by winning the British Junior Open.

His proudest career moment to date came in October 2006 when he became the first home-grown player to win the British Open men’s title for 67 years.  The triumph rounded off an outstanding year for Nick, which began when he won the British National title for the first time – later becoming the only person to hold the National and Open titles simultaneously. In December 2007, playing with his partner James Willstop, Nick led England to a successful defence of the World Team title, defeating Australia in the final.

Nick underwent surgery in 2008 before making a storming return in 2009 by making the final of the Tournament of Champions in New York and then subsequently securing the Swedish Open trophy for the first time in his career.
In October 2009 Nick strengthened his grip on fifth place in the world rankings by winning the British Open.
